To my understanding a lot of Russian athletes are members of Russian army. Not to mention, they can be used better as propaganda tools than as cannon fodder.

I was avoiding the assumption that sports and military types often go in a sort of lock-step of competitive nature character - and have a deep overlap socially.
true, that your understanding may be accurate, notwithstanding where trust in their own military may have eroded with the war in year 4.
