    seeing another round of "don't favorite posts on fedi"

    folks it is a kind and lovely thing to favorite someone's post and anyone who tells you not to be kind and lovely has told you something about themself

    it's true that it doesn't particulary increase the distribution of your post but the idea that we're all here to get things distributed as far as possible is pretty weird

      @sarae I fav things I find nice, but they probably don't fit thematically with other things I boost/post. For example, I usually enjoy boosting cool photography and art. If I find someone bragging about their new shoes, I will give them a like because it's cool, but people who got used to the things I usually boost will scratch their heads trying to figure out why it's on their timeline.
      If someone has a problem with my like, I may as well mute them and give them nothing... 🫠

        @sarae

        Favorites are part of the conversation. They are lovely. It's like saying 'good morning' or 'thanks'. It doesn't have to be transactional. It can just be nice.

          @DamonWakes I'm old enough that most of my use of Twitter was before it did that

          so I find the insistence that This Is The Way pretty weird

                @fu @mastodonmigration I spend plenty of time selling my services

                this isn't a venue in which I do so

                well no, that's not completely true, I do advertise fundraising calendars for the Pacific Northwest Labor History Association most years

                but that's more of a volunteer thing

                  This is also just a very mastodon-centric view of things. It is neither inherently true, nor true on all existing platforms. It's just the way that Mastodon developers decided to implement things. On Lemmy, an up-vote increases the post/comment ranking and increases redistribution. On NodeBB, a like forces the server to retain the the post beyond the server's remote content purge threshold. Other platforms could do things different still, and likely already do.

                  The fediverse isn't synonymous with Mastodon. It never was, and it never will be.

                        @sarae Marking something as a favourite is saying "I like this"; boosting it is saying "I think this has value to the people who follow me." My guess is that people who say this find that people favourite their stuff much more often than boosting it.

                        That's a reflection on what they post, not on other users.

                        Trying to dictate how the platform gets used is futile. If they want more boosts, then maybe they should work on content that people feel is boost-worthy instead of trying to make it someone else's problem.

                            @sarae Sounds like the old "gaming the algorithm" mind set. Luckily, on Mastodon, things that are worth spreading, are spread, whether you fav it, or not.

                              @sarae It lets me know it was seen, and I was heard. If you just scroll, there is zero interaction. I'm not here for that. Comment, boost, or leave a little star that means "hey, I see you" at the very least. Sometimes I post things and they get nothing, and that's honestly a bit depressing.

                                for me, the key to social media is the boost. human virality, not algos. but favorites are about acknowledgement and appreciation. they are awesome.

                                    @sarae i'm so old i remember when "likes" on Twitter and Facebook didn't actually increase a post's visibility either because the timeline was strictly reverse chronological. i am 40 and apparently am the oldest person by far alive on earth, with amazing powers of memory that scientists are still trying to unravel

                                      @nev LOLLL. 👍🏼 I was so annoyed when they implemented that. My likes were supposed to be to the individual, not for the world to see! When I came to Mastodon, I breathed a sigh of relief about that!

                                        Favorites are part of the conversation. They are lovely. It's like saying 'good morning' or 'thanks'. It doesn't have to be transactional. It can just be nice.

                                          @sarae @awawawa yes! I sometimes read as +support +love +you’re seen

                                          in disability communities I feel especially it never vibes “they LIKE that I’m having a brutal week,” it’s “they saw I’m having a brutal week & sent me a boop to know I’m not alone”

                                          I think it’s v weird when I see discourse and ppl are adamant it only means “I like this”. Have your friends not been suffering & do you not boop support?

                                          @moss @sarae @awawawa it's a great way to bridge the gap between "no one cares" and "no one knows what to say"
                                          The latter is a much easier truth to accept!
