Are folks still using Flickr? Is it a nice place to be in — no algorithms, no AI slop? Would you recommend it?
Thinking of reviving my long dead account
(Boost for reach, please)
@matratype I lost interest when they threatened to delete my photos if I didn't go premium. Never went back.

@matratype @fsvo I am. Not sure if anyone I know personally sees anything I post there, though it’s up for posterity, and (unlike Zuck’s Dopamine Slot Machine) linkable on the open web.

@AzureKingfisher Oh
What happened? -
@oheso Excellent! I used to have a Pro account over a decade ago, which I downgraded when my usage fell.
Loved seeing the heron in your photos

-
@matratype I've been using Flickr since 2004. Will use it until I cannot use it no more. It's the only good place for photos on the Internet. Use it!
Oh, also my collection:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/jasohill@jasohill Thank you! Them cherry blossoms 🤩

@matratype I like it, there are a few features that Pixelfed doesn’t have that I like
@mandelbroccoli Ooh, like what? I haven’t considered Pixelfed at all, TBH. Not sure why

-
@scozmos Ohh, is that a regional or national regulation they are abiding by? Or is it their own requirement?
-
@matratype I do remember before social media realistically existed, it was an awesome place.
@adayinthedotcom That it was

-
@matratype
There are at least a few #flickr posts every month, so it seems like some folks do use it@Flominator Good point!

@AzureKingfisher Oh
What happened?@matratype I went on flickr when it was still owned by Yahoo. It got sold a couple of times and got worse here and there technically. Then they introduced a disk space limit retrospectively and didn't stop sending threatening emails that they would delete everything over that limit if I didn't sign up for premium right now.
I don't know if they deleted my photos. I lost all and every interest in that site. -

I made my account when Yahoo owned it, something I realised again yesterday when I noticed that my login credentials were Yahoo not Google. I didn’t realise things got bad in this way when they changed hands. -
@matratype i just made a new one but the groups are all very tumbleweeds
@forestine Thanks, that’s good to know

@jasohill Thank you! Them cherry blossoms 🤩
@matratype Thank you.
Just wrapped up the blossom season here in Northern Iwate. -
@matratype Still the best place to host, organize, and share photos. https://www.flickr.com/photos/stewf/collections/72157721878264417/
They are taking platform-agnostic preservation seriously, too: https://www.flickr.org/programs/content-mobility/data-lifeboat/
@typographica Wow, I didn’t know about their Data Lifeboat. Thanks!
-
@matratype I stopped posting there last December for no particular reason. Might resume at some point.
@jef @matratype Have a look at Vernissage, maybe?

@matratype so it may just be my Pixelfed client, but it just displays my feed as one long stream, whereas in Flickr I get a few shots from each group’s photos as a lump in my feed, letting me then go in and see what that group’s been doing. Also, there are discussions within groups, which is nice, especially for camera specific groups. Pixelfed doesn’t feel quite like it does that side of thing as well.
Also, searching through images by lens etc. is easier, which is a thing I like to do if I’m considering wasting a bunch more money on kit I don’t really need -
