I have deployed and run infra since the noughts, through some wild turns in geo/techno-political history, and will say that now more than ever, #selfhosting is an act of resistance.

@JulianOliver i could not agree more. hence, in my honest opinion, selfhosting should be considered one of the must-have skill for who claim to be IT people

@JulianOliver and even more so if it’s on a computer at home, and shared with friends/community

@emenel Agreed! For those that have the privilege of great bandwidth there is none better than on-prem. For big communities and high traffic platform surface, it can become untenable fast, even on top domestic fibre. Frontline communities (risk of raids) are best hosting outside of their operating jurisdiction also.

@JulianOliver @chetwisniewski and get a VPS or dedicated hosting outside 14 eyes, too. 1984.hosting is in Reykjavík and they're solid for VPS, for example
And I don't need to disclose my personal information if I don't want to sign up for an account. Just want to get a VPS, not pass a TS clearance check audit, lol.

@christoff @chetwisniewski Any Iceland DC has that 14eye airgap as you say, and with the added bonus of sweet habitable futuring geothermal energy. So often overlooked IMO, esp in this era of CO2e credit washing and PPA's.

@JulianOliver @chetwisniewski That's cool, I didn't know that.

@JulianOliver yes, absolutely. the challenge with so much off site hosting is that it’s essentially those same mega corps again. there are definitely options that are better, or at least better compromises. but it can be hard to navigate.
