I didn't expect photo radar to affect restaurant patio licensing fees in Edmonton. But so much of urban planning is intertwined.

Edmonton's program to encourage restaurant patios on sidewalks & parking lanes was funded by the city's Safe Mobility Strategy; these patios slow street traffic & attract pedestrians.

The Safe Mobility Strategy is funded in part from traffic fines.

Traffic-fine revenue dropped significantly when the province banned most photo radar.
