We're thinking of finally giving up Xfinity/Comcast and switching to Ziply fiber and streaming services. Anyone have experience with #Ziply? Is it reliable, unreliable, fast, slow? Thanks!

(Also open to suggestions re: cordcutting in general, whether we should get a streaming bundle from YouTube or ? etc. etc.)

@msbellows we use kind of a crop rotation practice with streaming services where we harvest all the shows currently on that service we care about before canceling and moving to the next one, eventually looping back after they get more content. Rather than use smart TV apps I use a Chromecast device that's on its last legs to stream content from my phone to the TV. We also have a physical antenna for local channels (and the Blazers).

@msbellows Ziply seems they support IPv6, so that is a positive sign they are forward-looking. https://bgp.tools/as/20055. Only Ziply and customers suffering would know about route redundancy and oversubscribed links. Oversubscribed links used to be a problem with Comcast ~15 years ago and with AT&T Fiber ~5-10 years ago.

"YouTube TV" is actually quite nice -- streams well, interface is not too annoying, and has live sports. The name is pretty confusing, however.

@mossyfoot Does the local antenna receive digital signals or ? Are the local channels broadcast for free?

fortunately the rat did that outside the house so I didn't have to pay for it

I'm currently up to $70 a month tho, need to call and see if they'll knock that back down

@msbellows yeah it gets the regular broadcast networks and a number of odd digital over the air channels, most of which just show old re-runs. I like the one that shows old cartoons though. All free just like the olden times.

@msbellows No Ziply here, but we divorced Comcast a year ago, switched to our local fiber co, $81 for a 2Gb pipe. Maybe a ten-minute outage a month that I notice, filled in with a cellular hotspot. We use Hulu + Live for TV shows, which works OK. The DVR is unlimited, but it's not as easy to use as Comcast's. Specifically for sports, you can't tell it to record Sunday Night Football, for example. Gotta find each week's broadcast on the schedule, select and hit Record.

We're saving about $80/mo and the internet's faster, though only on one computer (my main desktop). Other devices in the house can't handle more than 1Gb
