BREAKING: Maryland becomes first state to ban AI ‘dynamic pricing’ in grocery stores.
-
Grocery stores use AI, digital price tags, and cameras to track YOUR behavior.
Then they set the price based on what they think YOU will pay. Not what the item is worth.
AI technology is making this possible:
- Digital shelf tags that update in real time
- Aisle cameras that track shopper behavior
- Apps that shift from search-based to predictive
- AI that learns your purchase history, income signals, and price ceiling
- Real-time cart tracking to spot when demand is surging@FluentInFinance I don't agree with this dynamic pricing strategy, but by definition what something is worth is determined by what you are willing to pay.

@fst @FluentInFinance That's a plural "you" in the economic theory; dynamic pricing is a singular "you."

@FluentInFinance When the tech bros say AI is worth trillions it’s not because of mass personal uptake and usage, it’s because of real world commercial enshitification like this.
@opethminded @FluentInFinance taken to its logical extreme though I’d like to see Whole Foods charging Musk $100 million for a carton of eggs

For food? If you are not willing to pay, are you willing to starve? -

@fst @FluentInFinance I'm not willing to pay anything to a vendor that charges me twice as much as the person stood next to me for the same item. The market sets the price at what people *collectively* are willing to pay. There are reasons people ended up shopping more in stores with price labels than markets where everything was haggled for. A retail experience dark age fueled by technology intended to erase community power holds zero appeal.

BREAKING: Maryland becomes first state to ban AI ‘dynamic pricing’ in grocery stores.
This means 49 other states still allow it.
Dynamic pricing already runs airlines, hotels, and rideshares. Groceries are the next frontier.
Here's how it works:

I'd like to see Musk walk through a grocery store. He'd try and grab a box of Pop-Tarts and wind up with an entire 4-footer toppling onto him.

@fst @FluentInFinance it is called price gauging by speculation and is frowned upon for food and othet necessities....by law.

The store's AI takes all of that and figures out YOUR price.
Not the market price. Not a fair price. YOUR price, based on what you're willing to pay.
This is terrifying. This manipulation is pure greed.
Maryland just banned it. The Protection from Predatory Pricing Act makes it the first state to outlaw dynamic pricing in grocery stores.
Technology should serve us. We should not serve technology.
If THIS is where we're at now, then this is a friendly reminder that if you see someone stealing food... no, you don't.

@FluentInFinance don't forget aboit the online shopping apps that impersonate actual grocers and retailers. The all are extremely dangerous apps with felony level security risks for consumers who ar supposed to be protected by the government.

@FluentInFinance and apartment rentals. Rent offers change daily.
@david @FluentInFinance I signed a lease for an apartment and planned to move in. Day before I was to pick up the keys I get a call from the complex, their crew made a mistake and broke a water line in the apartment while setting it for move in. The apartment had serious damage and was unable to be lived in till repairs are made. Good news, they had another apartment, same floor, different building, same floor plan, available immediately. $50 more a month for rent. Plus 2¢ more per kwh for power

@FluentInFinance
My cynical take, predatory pricing is when a gas station raises their price just for you.
When big companies do it, it's called capitalism. -
