#GOP offers a ridiculous additional $1B for #WhiteHouse “security”, sparking dispute over #ballroom

#Senate #Republicans maintain their proposal would authorize #security construction, but not the #Trump ballroom. The White House disagrees.

Senate Republicans late Monday proposed $1 billion to pay for new White House security measures, with lawmakers & White House ofcls disagreeing over whether the #legislation would cover Trump’s planned ballroom.

The proposed legislative text says the money would be used for both aboveground & underground #security features that the #Trump admin has refused to fully detail. The text explicitly says the money could not be used for “non-security elements” of the project, a reference to Trump’s planned #ballroom.

“This bill does not fund #ballroom construction,” Grassley spox Clare Slattery said in a statement. “It provides funds for #SecretService enhancements that will ensure all presidents, their families & their staffs are adequately protected.”

The legislative proposal comes amid a #legal battle over whether the project can proceed, with US District Judge Richard Leon last month ordering a halt to aboveground construction on the ballroom unless #Congress authorizes the project….

An appeals court panel has stayed Judge Leon’s order while it considers the case.

Construction on the project continues apace. Photos taken in the past week show crews have erected a concrete structure topped with columns of exposed rebar, used to reinforce pillars that will support additional floors.

🚨#WhiteHouse ofcls falsely claimed Tuesday that the #legislation, if enacted, would authorize the ENTIRE project—including the aboveground #ballroom.

…The #legislation would be included in the Senate’s planned budget reconciliation bill, which can be enacted with a simple majority, bypassing any potential filibuster & eliminating the need for #Republicans to court #Democrats’ votes.

Before it advances, the parliamentarian will review the #WhiteHouse security proposal to ensure it complies with rules limiting what can be included in #reconciliation bills. Only provisions related to spending or generating revenue can be included.

@Nonilex a total waste of money. The 3 attempts that got anywhere near his vicinity were because secret service fucked up.
A billion dollars doesn't fix that.

And besides that, his life isn't worth a billion dollars to protect, thats what the 22nd amendment is for.
What are these numbers anyway, a billion for this, a trillion for the pentagon, just call it what it is- a slush fund, do what you like with it.
