The #WelshGovernment has a policy of bilingualism. All meetings include translators, so that speakers of English or Welsh can participate equally. But every member of the Welsh Cabinet is a native speaker of #Cymraeg, so the Cabinet meetings will be held in their native lsnguage.
Imposing the #EnglishLanguage was a key component of the imperial project of Briritishness. But the tide has turned.

@2legged Bonus points for "indigenous language of Britain" there!

@ianturton @2legged @HarriettMB
Luxembourgish isn't an official EU language either.
@guenther @2legged @HarriettMB but doesn't everyone in Luxembourg learn French, German and Luxembourgish at school (and in my experience very good English too)?

Apparently. So it's similar to Ireland where everyone speaks English (and most even have it as their first language), isn't it?

It probably helps though that Luxembourgish and German are closely related, which isn't the case for Irish and English.

@2legged An actual lord actually saying βso much for the tolerant leftβ in response to an anti-colonialist action is so on the nose you couldnβt make it up if you tried.
@WhiteCatTamer @2legged An actual Lord who "believes" in Brexit but who has acquired an Irish passport so that the inconveniences of Brexit remain for lesser mortals.

@HarriettMB Yes, Ireland and Scitlsnd are along way behind.
In particular, Ireland has failed badly. Despite a (nominally) high priority given to the Irish language throughout the era of independence, use iof the language has plummeted
@2legged @HarriettMB Interestingly, this is how Ireland introduced the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988:

@2legged @HarriettMB Irish is such a beautiful language. It's a shame they don't use it more.

@2legged Well given the difference between getting shafted in English and being shafted in Welsh I'd say it was splitting hares between Welsh rarebit and cheese on toast..

@2legged It's worth pointing out (particularly to Moylam types) that interpretation will still be available and used in the meetings by those present that don't understand Welsh, such as some of their staff and some civil servants.

There yiu are again, @rhysw. Letting crucial omitted facts get in the way of the bilious prejudices of a pompous English overlord.

If Wales does become independent, or more independent, I will be so amused when in 20 or 40 years the people of Anglesey demand independence from the despots in Cardiff, and then 40 years later how the people of Holyhead need their freedom
@failedLyndonLaRouchite @2legged I thought it was quite amusing, but then I'm from Holyhead
However, I do think that power tends to accumulate at the centre, and those at the periphery feel neglected.
