How MinIO went from open source darling to cautionary tale

The $126M-funded object storage company systematically dismantled its community edition over 18 months, and the fallout is still spreading

@Gina maybe a dumb question, but if someone started using the package under Apache 2.0, did the new AGPL only apply if you upgraded a version? Or does that require compliance for all previous users?

@Gina luckily there is a great alternative: garage [1]

@brianb Based on the announcement article, they had to make changes in order for it to be licensed as AGPL (they released a report about it at the same time). So I think it's safe to say earlier versions are still Apache, but this is a better question for a lawyer.

@Gina@fosstodon.org This is why people prefer using actual free software, such as Garage, licensed under the AGPL-3.0, and hosted using free software too.

Open Source is a scam, as has been proven countless times now.
