My walk in Friesland will go past quite a few bird watching places. I love birds but I'm rubbish at identifying them. I've never done any actual bird watching either so how does one go about identifying the birds? Just bring a book and frantically flip through it until you have identified the bird?

I would recommend getting a guide book or arrange to go with an experienced birder. I found this website that might be useful

#birds #birdwatching@Chrissy I'm not sure if you take a smart phone with you, but there is an app that identifies birds by their song.

@debbie I will and I have heard of that app but I also wanted to know what birds I see (especially as some will be quite a distance away and not sure if their song will carry).

@Walkaholic Thank you! I thought it was just for identifying sounds but it's great that you can also look up birds by how they look.

#birds #birdwatching@Chrissy This 4-part video series is super helpful to get the basic concepts down (not flipping through a bird ID book/app randomly). You can narrow the bird based on size and shape, color pattern, behavior, and habitat. It’s a great start, videos based in the US but concepts can be applied anywhere. https://academy.allaboutbirds.org/inside-birding-size-shape/

Definitely don't carry a heavy guidebook on a long walk!! The Merlin app and vinyl-laminated cheat sheets from the region you'll be in are the way to go.
Also, I chatted with my sister about things for older women to carry on multi-day hikes. She and her besti have done Caminos in Spain, Portugal, and France. She just has one outfit for walking and another for after arrival. She used Poise pads for a while for leakage. I'd slice my legs to ribbons if I used those. Your smartphone and a decent charger with an e-SIM will help out in so many ways. The Rome2Rio app is great whenever you need transportation. -
