@zarel Oh they *were* available for a reasonable price some time ago, in the Before Times, but that time has long gone. I don't dare find out what they go for now, it wouldn't be good for my health

I should expatiate that this isn't some kind of hipster / lifestyle / Instagram-esque virtue signalling like I want to flex how I'm really into mindfulness and anti-consumerism; I spent _five hours_ writing on this thing today, it is literally the best tool for the job given my specific set of constraints and nothing modern has been invented that can best it, so this is what I use. Likewise, I have been using an iPod since 2003. Nobody has engineered a better one worth a damn.

I do not think of myself as a writer, I think of myself as someone who wants to write.

I carry a laptop most of the time, a Lenovo T14s which annoys me every time I use it that I didn't get a 13" one -- they shouldn't even make laptops bigger than that. But it's an infinite distraction machine, a myriad of little demands that all add up. I get that some people have their ultra riced setup with a tiling window manager you've never heard of and even their web-browser is in a terminal. I am not one of those people, I am a sloth with an Energizer rabbit for a brain. If I want to be free of distraction, I have to _physically_ remove myself from it. But it also means that even though I don't want hassle, I am also extremely adept at using my tools. I don't want "smart" tools that limit me or tell me how I should be working. I need a keyboard, a screen and same RAM to put text in to. I need the flexibility of general purpose, "dumb" computing, I do not need a writing _expérience_.

This is the best thing we've got for a cheap(?), hackable pocket platform with a keyboard in 2026 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ym3Q73iIAeg and even that is still a toy compared to a #Psion

“It weighs 6lbs, is as practical to carry around as a sandwich-press, has a ‘comfortable’ 2.5hr battery (which might die permanently if I let it drain too far), and modern OSes are both sluggish and wholly unsuited for this ultra-wide aspect screen but I guess it’s really cool looking!” — Every #cyberdeck build video

Makes me want to get my own tiny Smalltalk system designed for such setups.

But yes, they're usually cool looking

I've been #writing every day for 15 weeks, ~3 months! I thought it was only a month!? Sometimes I might only write a sentence or two in a day, sometimes it's five hours.I've passed 30'000 words now, ~120 pages in standard UK paperback size.

Over-arching plotting is by far the hardest part; actually putting out words -- describing things, capturing moments -- I don't find any difficulty with, but I've been going through a long chunk of what I call Disney-ride exposition: An on-rails section of stopping points to explain things. This bit has been slow going, but I may just have to write it and come back another time to change it. Those who like world-building won't be short for details!

Would anybody be interested in an #ebook / PDF of what I've written so far?

You can read large chunk of it here: https://oldbytes.space/@Kroc/115895172569381595 but Mastodon scrolling is probably not a good reading experience.
