@aru not obscure but chromeboxes, with the mrchromebox.tech firmware, are perfect little netbsd boxes, especially the older generations. I have 2 (HP and ASUS) with an 8th gen i7 and everything works out of the box.

WiFi chips are a pain. I have an old Dell Latitude and the WiFi chip is not supported, and I tried. But it has ethernet plug and for 10$ USB WiFi (realtek) dongle, I get WiFi back.
However, getting XFCE4 desktop working misses edge hardware like, HDMI video works (so dual screen) but HDMI sound and mic. had troubles.
Installing GhostBSD (FreeBSD based) and everything works, except the onboard WiFi, but USB dongle does.
