The UK was able to phase out their coal industry b/c they Socialized it (ie: the gov't owned all the coal.)As long as there's money to be made by private industry by a dwindling resource, we will continue to fight wars over them.
It's not unlike how there's more profit in keeping you sick than to heal you completely.
