Forgive me for sounding like a broken record, but we are not a Christian nation. We are a nation where you are free to be a Christian.

Your religion guides you, not all of us. It’s as simple as that.

@Strandjunker a large number of Christians in name only want their church's restrictions to be magically applied to everyone else, and not themselves.

Religion is voluntary, that's what freedom means.

      @Urban_Hermit @Strandjunker
Especially given that most people pushing the “Christian nation” theology are clearly heretical

@Strandjunker Stop me if you've heard this before.

If we're a "Christian nation" then which ones? Catholic? Methodist? Episcopalian? Baptist? Mormon? Hauterite? Jehovah's Witness? Which one?! It can't be all of them because many of the ones I mentioned see the others as false Christians, sometimes outright blasphemous.

@Strandjunker we are indeed a nation where anybody is free to believe or not believe whatever they want, because earlier generations fought hard for the principle of #separation of #church and #state. Let's also be fair enough to admit that #enlightment, #secularism, #science and political freedom were made possible because our - then - #christian principles allowed us do so. And let us fiercely defend the separation of state and church against ány religion wanting to turn back that clock.

@Strandjunker all followers of Christianity that I know, the real ones regardless of denomination, would completely agree with this too. Anyone who wouldn’t agree with this statement are the ones to watch out for.

Christians who flaunt Christianity while insisting we are a Christian nation often prove to be the very evidence we are not.

@Strandjunker "This is a Christian nation!" cry all the assholes who don't really know what that means and just use the statement as a club against anyone whose opinion they don't like.

@Strandjunker @mastodonmigration Religion shouldn't identify a nation. It's a personal, intimate choice. That said, we must be aware that there are some values which should be universal, compatible with every religion. Peace, justice, human rights. However we know that religions often want to control our primal activities (sex and food) as it's the only way they can control entire populations.
On food we have some reasons - christian or muslim period where the observants shouldn't eat. It's to save food resources, originally in poor countries maybe. Until spring brings fresh fruits/seeds etc. Indians don't eat cows because they're good for milk... But unfortunately these rules have conditioned people for centuries.
That said, in my country we have our prime minister Giorgia Meloni whose motto is "I'm Giorgia, I'm a woman, I'm Italian, I'm a mother, I'm Christian".
Well, to quote you: you're free to be christian but you talk for yourself!

@Strandjunker Emo Philips has a long joke I don’t have the space to recite here but the general idea is that religion is schismatic and we get violent about it. Forcing the government to get violent about enforcing the religious schism of the minute is a well tested bad idea. https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2005/sep/29/comedy.religion

@Strandjunker My daughter‘s mother-in-law is a Trumper and she went to the beach with us today and they mentioned it. I told them I believe in the separation of church and state and would never participate in this type of sinister event.

Forgive me for sounding like a broken record, but we are not a Christian nation. We are a nation where you are free to be a Christian.

Your religion guides you, not all of us. It’s as simple as that.

@Strandjunker The extreme right has some distorted belief that they are responsible for the actions of others (their brand of morality imposed on others)...until they are asked to help support those who cannot support themselves.

At that point they completely reverse their position and say others have to pull their weight especially those who have no arms or legs to pull anything.
