@elly @codemonkeymike @paulywill @nicolas17 @yama case in point, it's #AntiRepairDesign and there is no legitimate reason whatsoever!…
@elly @codemonkeymike @paulywill @nicolas17 @yama Worse even: #Apple's "#AEFI" / "#BridgeOS" is also on the same #SSD as the #OS, so when the SSDs suicide with
VBAT(13,2V) on 2,7V (or inevitably dies over useage due to writes) the device is braindead.- And that too is purposeful #AntiRepairDesign!

@codemonkeymike Android tablets are exactly the same, by the way.
@oscherler @codemonkeymike IME Android tablets don't even have serious bootloader locking, unlike phones. You can basically do whatever with them.
-
@codemonkeymike Link to information about this? Are you saying that the donors failed to clear these machines properly before getting rid of them, or that it is impossible for them to do so?
It’s possible to wipe the machine in a way that fails to remove the lock, and it’s not obvious to the user that it’s still locked when they think they’ve wiped it.

Without donor contact, these machines are useless.

I've upcycled ~1,000 older Macs, but T2 era machines will end that. It's controlling, creates e-waste, and will only get worse. #righttorepair matters — Apple couldn't care less.
@codemonkeymike Gee that sucks. If I ever get rid of my intel macbook I'll have to remember to unlock everything.

@codemonkeymike There are many Windows laptops that can be used for Linux, why should Mac users who pay for security worry about this use of their old computer? If you don’t want a Mac don’t buy one, T2 chip or no. And Apple Silicon has this security built in without a T2 chip, so it isn’t only the T2. You can fix this by passing laws, but you can also pass laws to unlock other kinds of computer security, where does that end?

@codemonkeymike I've heard of people getting them unlocked by asking Apple directly. if you have a lot of them, it's worth pursuing.

@codemonkeymike I had someone give me a used iPad last year and they hadn't reset it and the absolute nightmare I had getting it to work.
They wound up having to trust me with their username and password to log into their account so I could physically deal with it on the device.
Absolute fucking bullshit.

@coldclimate it really hurts every one of my brain cells. How could they not have thought about this?
@codemonkeymike @coldclimate assuming they didn't seems excessively generous to me. It seems far more likely they did and don't care. Smaller secondhand market means more pressure for new purchases.

@codemonkeymike You may need to dump it at the Apple Store for them to recycle it.

@codemonkeymike it’s thoroughly disgusting. So much waste, yet they play it off like it’s a benefit. No, Apple, most of us don’t want to steal someone else’s property or data, we just want to use otherwise unaffordable yet perfectly functional personal computers.
At this point they need to be forced by law to loosen it up a bit.
-
@codemonkeymike counterpoint is that it's preventing theft so...

@brandonscript @codemonkeymike while they could simply give, don’t know, a certain number of years out of production and, honestly, they call them unsupported, so why not nuke the T2 on these? You know how many Macs I’ve seen that ended up being trashed because of this? It’s entirely irresponsible and yes they ought to be forced to back down a bit. We’re not suggesting that delicate and precious Mac users have their data stolen, nor their computing devices.

@codemonkeymike@fosstodon.org this is fucking evil. like its not just inconvenient and greedy, it is blatantly evil.

@codemonkeymike Can you install a Linux distro on it ?
-
@codemonkeymike @coldclimate Well. The use case they were trying to solve for was someone steals your laptop and tries to access it without your permission.
Hard part is getting owners to unlock it before donating/selling to someone else.
@HitokiriEric @coldclimate but here's the rub for me. Even if a user logs into their iCloud account and removes the device from their account, it still won't release.
That should be illegal.
Even enterprise locked Chromebooks can be decommissioned remotely and unlocked.
There is no reason this cant be done with apple.

@sgtpepere nope. That's what I'm trying to do. But you can't boot to the usb without unlocking it.
It's a trap

@codemonkeymike Ah, I didn't know about that. That really sucks.
-
@codemonkeymike Does it run Linux?
@multi_flexi the t2 chip won't let you boot from USB unless you unlock it. And you need this to unlock it.
So nope. It's stuck

@LunaCOLON3 I agree. There really is no excuse for this.
