hi fedi! does anyone happen to know how to acquire a nice witch hat?

(i.e. people who sell them, would be willing to make them, or maybe even just instructions I can follow myself)

I desperately need a witch hat to complete my character, especially given the upcoming talks I'll be giving '

by "nice" I mean something that I could wear daily, something that brings joy, something that's well made, looks nice up close, and will last forever. (I can find a lot of bad hats, but what's the point...)

    reposts are appreciated, mrrrow,,,

          @mei oh, you bet!

@wffl@im-in.space the few witches I know all bought theirs from some sellers on etsy. I can't attest for any of them, but I bet you can find something cool if you search.

I made my own from thick felt; it has some problems and I will probably remake it when I have some time (flops on the wind too much, doesn't keep a cool shape, etc).

if you want to wear it outside then definitely mount a belt onto it, and get it tight enough that it holds snugly on your head. world of a difference.

generally can recommend making your own, it's cheap, relatively easy (i'm not good at sewing and I did it in an evening), and endlessly customizable

@domi @mei @wffl I always thought the belt-thing is just to make it look extra nice, didn’t ever think about it actually serving a purpose. TIL!

@wffl if you make it yourself, durability and looking nice will depend largely on the quality of your cloth and precision in cutting and sewing

fwiw, the geometry of a straight witch hat seems fairly easy, since it's just a cone and a rim

@wffl https://keikolynn.com/2023/09/witch-hat-pattern-free-download/ there's a free pattern here which looks fairly easy, but is also very no-frills

@wffl Dr. Cos (from whom i got the patterns for my maid outfit) also have a pattern for a witch hat but it is paid, expects you some tools you probably do not have (sewing machine & serger) and the quality of the English instructions is not super beginner friendly.

@wffl do you have a specific style or material in mind? Are you more interested in paying for one that's customized, or making one? Felting is a super accessible craft to get into if you don't already know it, also a great way to detail a plain premade base. I'm not sure if there are DIY witch hat tutorials that are super easy, but I'm betting there would be. If you want help figuring out something that might work for you or want some tips (specifically on needle felting), feel free to DM me.

@wffl after a quick rabbit hole exploration, if you want to go DIY, you can modify a wide brimmed "summer" hat and just make the point longer. side note: looks like the hat comes from the alewife dress ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alewife_(trade) )

hi fedi! does anyone happen to know how to acquire a nice witch hat?

(i.e. people who sell them, would be willing to make them, or maybe even just instructions I can follow myself)

@wffl Ì found these pins but haven’t tried them myself so can’t give any personal recommendations. Etsy seems to have a range of hats but it’s a bit harder to find handmade stuff on there lately.

@secretsloth not sure about material, but I think I do have a style in mind. Ideally I want a big brim and the pointy bit should be not be straight. probably not surprisingly my biggest inspo is simz's art (I will probably have to compromise on the brim at least a bit bc big brim is hard physically).

I think I'm more interested in paying for one, rather than making it, just on the basis of "I know I'll procrastinate on this forever". but then again, if making it myself isn't too hard, that also sound appealing, I could at least try yk 😃

@wffl I do know I have some fabric and fiber artists in my mufos, so maybe someone will see the boost, @inherentlee knows stuff about leatherwork and could maybe chime in about that? Unsure about hat knowledge 😅 but! I would think someone could make you a simple hat base pretty easily, the brim could likely be reinforced for stiffness. Texture is the question really when it comes to material. Leather you'll know, real leather I think would be durable enough and probably could be curved.
