    Walkway Over Dangerous Train Crossing Is Dead After Norfolk Southern Backtracks on Funds, Mayor Says

    The mayor of Hammond, Indiana, says the rail company had promised to help pay for a pedestrian bridge after ProPublica and InvestigateTV documented dozens of children crawling through trains to get to school. The company denies making this pledge.

      @ai6yr
      Rail companies are genuinely evil.

      My sister is an engineer, and was working on a project with a railroad company. The company she worked for had warned the railroad repeatedly that a tunnel on one of its routes was in desperate need of maintenance. The railroad insisted work only be done when the line wasn't being used.

      My sister was on the crew when the thing finally collapsed. It was a miracle no one died.

      If they'd shut it down for one week, repairs could have been made safely.

        ...but you know, one week was a loss of one whole week of profits. Couldn't have that.

        Instead, the tunnel was shut down for months to be completely rebuilt.

        And don't even get me started on what they do to their engineers. Driving a train sounds fantastic... but it's all you'll ever do for the rest of your life because you don't get any time off.

            @ai6yr @realtegan

            Can confirm. Was Freight Conductor in past life, this is how class 1 railroad works. Thank fuck I left. I could not conduct another 40 years before retiring.
