Morning word pondering: is the verb "deke" a Canadianism?

    Common usage examples:
"The cat was chasing me and I deked him out."

"I was in the area anyway so I deked into the 7Eleven for a bag of chips."

The likely origin domain is hockey as in…
"Lafleur deked around the defenseman and put it into the net."

@ottaross I think so, but if we use it enough, it'll spread into the internet like all the other Canadian and Toronto-isms that have caught on with the young'uns.

@ottaross Certainly in regular usage among my childhood cohort in New Brunswick; mainly in the context of hockey, of course.

@ottaross @troublewithwords I’ve heard/used the term here in the US, but yes, in a hockey adjacent context, so… maybe??

@ottaross I have heard it in New England north of Boston. It seems to only proliferate here in communities with a strong hockey tradition

@tantramar I recall the same. Funny, nowadays how often it involves pet interactions. 😂

@ottaross First time I hear of it.

What’s it supposed to mean? 🤔

@EdwinG it means al something like: "to employ quick unpredictable moves," as in when a player in a game maneuvers around an opponent.

@ottaross Also, can’t help thinking your choice of example — Lafleur — is indicative of us both being of a certain vintage. 😬

@Brendan aha, interesting. A nucleus of usage gradually spreading in the community.
