Office wear was generally t-shirt and jeans, but on the days they had to meet investors he would put on a really nice suit and then take a long lunch break to go test drive a car. Because it turns out that the test drives were in fact wage-restricted, they just didn't have a great way of measuring "wage".

Many have unpaid overtime written into their contracts. So yes, in Germany people do work without pay, while companies avoid to pay for overtime. Also many have to do hours that never appear in any book.

"Working to rule" is very often frowned upon.

Any decent employer will compensate for it. In fact the regulations re: recording working hours got tightened not so long ago...

Contracts don't regulate the time you spend on the job but the time allotted for that job, and a not-so-decent employer will make sure only the latter goes in your time report.

If cleaning these offices in the time allotted is too much to ask for, feel free to finish after clocking out.
