If Mark Zuckerberg can shut it down, then it wasn't the Metaverse! If Mark Zuckerberg can flip a switch and turn it off then it was just a 3D avatar chat app

@SarraceniaWilds There was no difference. The only difference was marketing.
Oh, and Horizon Worlds was *worse* and afaik more locked down than pre-existing products like Second Life or VRChat, of course.

@mcc When teaching about the Internet in the early days, I said it was the largest connected network of all those based on TCP/IP, and imagined which would be "the" Internet if you somehow cleaved all its connections into two halves.
In one sense, if Horizon Worlds was the currently largest shared avatar-based virtual world existent, sure, okay, it was the Metaverse.
But I 100% agree that what should let something be called "THE Metaverse" is interoperability (perhaps OSVR or OpenXR?), and by that standard, Meta was anything BUT the Metaverse, and probably was standing in its way.
