I saw Todo Sobre Mi Madre in a cafe this evening, with a small discussion afterward.

I was hoping for Spanish subtitles, but they didn't have any (it was just projected from Amazon Movies).. However, the Wikipedia plot summary filled the gaps, and it was very good. It's an interesting mixture though, of the main plot, and a stage production of Street Car Named Desire (not to mention a touch of All About Eve--note the title similarity). I'm definitely going to watch it with subtitles and Mollie, because there's a lot of symbolism missing in how the use monologues from Street Car, and I didn't get the jokes.

The trans representation is dated (it's from the 90's), but the themes of motherhood, women's roles, gender identity, orientation, AIDS, abortion, sex work, and Alzheimer's, are still timely. And there was a nice dedication at the end.

At the end Almodóvar dedicates the film to some of the actresses in the movies he references, and "To all actresses who have played actresses. To all women who act. To men who act and become women. To all the people who want to be mothers. To my mother".
