    @jason That looks like a good one (and it uses PHP, too)! And of course https://www.phpbb.com is still kicking!

    @neatnik @jason I wish more communities would switch back to forums. Not everything needs to be a real time chat; and discord has horrendous search capabilities. Discourse or phpBB makes so much more sense for 95% of what people use Discord communities nowadays.

      Discourse is another excellent self-hosted alternative to Discord. I’ve just published a guide on how to get it up and running on your own server for less than the cost of a Discord “server boost” (bleh).

      Setting up a Discourse server / a Neatnik Guide

      Give your community a private, safe home by running a Discourse server. It’s easier than you think!

          @neatnik When does Neatnik develop the chat server to replace Discord? I'd sign up in a heartbeat. For money.

          Discourse is great. It ain't chat.

            @johnnydecimal Hah, maybe someday! But if you haven’t seen Discourse’s chat feature lately, it’s definitely worth a look — it’s come a long way since they first added it. 👍

              @neatnik Great guide! I'm curious if you've ever had issues with email on SMTP ports on Hetzner? It's an issue I've run into several times for 32bit cafe services, which are all on DigitalOcean.

                @yequari Hetzner blocks SMTP ports by default to keep their IP space clean, but they’ll open them on your account upon request if you’re an established customer. 👍

                  @neatnik Iiiiiiinteresting.

                  I wonder if this is one of those weird behavioural things. I can't see any situation in which my Discord – where we have been discussing getting off Discord – successfully migrates to this. But I don't know why. It ticks all the boxes:

                  - [ ] It's not Discord.
                  - [ ] It is chat.

                  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

                      @neatnik
                      Thanks for posting this. I tried setting it up on my homelab, but it really doesn't like sitting behind a reverse proxy. So I gave up and got an account with Hetzner. Sadly, although I used your link, I didn't get offered credit (in fact they charged €20 up front), so I don't think you'll get your €10 either - apologies.
                      Did get the Discourse server spun up and configured though, so that bit's all good.
