I made a web page describing how I got my #Xteink up and running. I’m enjoying the size, reading on it is a joy. It’s so pocketable! 🙂

@hollie This is fascinatingly remarkably similar looking to the light phone (minus the buttons on the bottom, we just have buttons on the side for volume and top for on/off).

@hollie @bookstodon oh wow! and it's not tied to any major tech overlord (Amazon, Apple, etc)?

@SRLevine Oh! I really want to get one of those, but I'm working out how to handle photos and such. Are you enjoying yours?

@PetterOfCats @bookstodon Not as far as I'm aware? It comes from a company, but no, not seemingly affiliated with any of the big tech giants. And it's relatively inexpensive, too, around $60-$70 USD (depending on discounts/sales).

@CoolerPseudonym @bookstodon Right now I get all my ebooks from Kobo.com, since my big ereader is a Kobo and that works seamlessly there.

I can also move those books onto my Xteink with the help of the Calibre app and some plugins.

@hollie The lightphone 3 can do photos, I have a 2 which does not. I really like it, but I also never had a smart phone? I like the "dumb" phone + tablet combination. If I want to make a call I just need a phone. For everything else I want a giant screen (though I do not have cell service on my tablet and don't ever use the phone as a hotspot for it, so I'm not exactly using the tablet in place of a smart phone, it's more in place of carrying around a book or two).

If you want to try a 2 I do have a second due to a comedy of errors. There is a small crack in the screen, but it doesn't seem to be a problem for using it (I assume the battery is still decent, though it's been sitting for a year or two now). The only "catch" is that if I send it to you it can't be sold, if you don't like it it has to be passed on for free to someone else since it was gifted to me as part of the "anti-capitalist cellphone reuse economy" (or however my friend phrased it).

@SRLevine I love that! The anti-capitalist cellphone reuse economy! I would absolutely participate! 🙂

Heck yeah, I would love to try it, I would be using it to see whether I'd want to get the 3, because the photos for me would be a big deal. So it would for sure get passed on when I made that decision!

@hollie I should power it on to test the battery tonight, but if it looks good I'll let you know tomorrow and we can figure out how to mail it. I have no idea how mailing something with a battery works. I've offered it to people before on here, but no one was really interested outside of "maybe I'd see if I liked it for a weekend" because they are pretty weird devices. I'm happy with a cellphone that

                        1. makes calls/texts
                        2. has an alarm clock
                        3. has a calculator
                        4. I can type little notes into
                        5. plays mp3s or podcasts

                        and nothing else

@SRLevine Oh gosh, the plays MP3s or podcasts is what I need! That's kind of the big issue for me, I listen to a lot of novels in audiobook form.

I'm so curious! Thanks for trying to make the sending work! 🙂
