I am struck by the similarities between PM Carney and his Governor General appointment. Both have extensive experience in Canada, Europe and the UN. Both have well developed networks and respect world wide. GG Arbour has intimate knowledge of the Law of Canada especially the Constitution. She understands her roles legal boundaries far better than Antone else in that role.

@CTHW Hmm, yeah, she might be one GG who would actually have the confidence to stand up to a PM in defence of the constitution.
But now you've got me imagining an alternate reality where it was PM Louise Arbour, defender of human rights, appointing internationally-respected former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney as Governor General.
That'd be nice, although I can't imagine a situation that would have ever get her into partisan politics, so here we are: the people I'd want making big decisions are at best getting appointed positions.I do wonder at the woman who get bored with being a Supreme Court Justice accepting a position that is all ceremonies & diplomacy & little direct impact. But it's only a 5-year term & she's a couple decades older than when she left the court.
