    THE MANY-COLORED LAND (1982)
    Acrylic

I loved Julian May’s “Pliocene Exile” series, but I never felt like I did the books justice. I remember struggling to come up with dramatic concepts for this, but Del Rey didn’t go for them. 1/3

Maybe the assignment came at a time I was feeling overworked. I can’t explain it at this point, but I wish so much that I could have had provided her an epic illustration the likes of THE SNOW QUEEN or THE WAY OF KINGS—her books deserved it! 2/3

Readers will recognize that the same image also served as the cover for The Golden Torc, only mirrored in reverse for book two. 3/3

@MichaelWhelan Hah: I had *not* noticed! Love those books. I'm surprised they're not more well known/appreciated.
