We’re sitting here and there’s AC and free snacks and people to talk to. The temp of people in trains just much happier and warmer
People are more ‘haha, isn’t it awful’ instead of angry
It’s a different way of seeing the world that’s less about getting there (eventually you will.. but I feel like that’s a very US train thing)

It's just, for most travel, it takes a long time. Not everyone has that luxury.

It’s a different way of seeing the world that’s less about getting there (eventually you will.. but I feel like that’s a very US train thing)
@skinnylatte @artcollisions I think there's something about even when the train is stuck, you're not *trapped* in the same way you are on a plane. Generally you can still get up and move around and use the bathroom and move between different cars as opposed to planes where they get EXTREMELY CRANKY if you leave your seat even if you're stuck on the tarmac.

It's just, for most travel, it takes a long time. Not everyone has that luxury.
@artcollisions @swachter oh yeah I wouldn’t be able to do this if I had a job job right now.
But that’s also the state of a lot of US local transit. Good in theory, glad it exists.. wish it were more reliable. And faster. (Shanghai to Beijing is 4.5h hours for 820 miles), many times a day

@skinnylatte @artcollisions I think there's something about even when the train is stuck, you're not *trapped* in the same way you are on a plane. We’ve been stuck outside Albuquerque for 1.5 hours (on top of the earlier stuck for 2 hours in Arizona)
There’s a couple of other trains including this train in the other direction that have to pass through and also get service in Albuquerque.
Glad I had the diner car breakfast. I was hoping to get to Albuquerque for.. brunch. Ahahaha
The brunch place I would recommend in Albuquerque is Barelas Coffee House
Carne Adovada breakfast - yum.

@swachter @skinnylatte Oh yes, this is a huge difference for me. I love taking the train between NYC and DC.
@artcollisions @skinnylatte Yeah, my family used to live in NJ and I took Amtrak between BOS and Metropark on many many occasions. So much better than flying.

Everyone’s congratulating them. An Amtrak employee’s family is on board with his kids and they’re expecting another child.
This is why I like train travel. Proper cutlery, views, observation lounges, rolling into city centers, no TSA

Just started moving after 3h of waiting. 5 more min to Albuquerque.
I feel fine. I’ve been in a train for 24 hours at this point. I slept well (I can sleep anywhere) and I was well fed. I need a shower, but mostly feeling fine. (I was prepared for severe delays…)

(My 24-45 hour Indian railways journeys prepared me.. but in those cases they were almost always moving)

@skinnylatte I took a train from Manhattan to Toronto that was held south of Albany for hours and then went through at less than 20mph. I arrived over 6 hours late, but had caught up on sleep.

Seems like their buses are fare-free.
Was kind of hard to find the bus stop (poor signage, closed sidewalks, no pedestrian crossing signs..) but I made it.
Fun fact: I don’t know any about NM or Albuquerque or transit here. Will update when I find out more
The bus is almost exactly the same as the AC Transit 1T in Oakland

@skinnylatte yeah, I’ve never been, but I remember this because it was a news story. Albuquerque busses have been zero-fare since late 2023 and it’s generally been considered successful at increasing ridership and helping lower income and unhoused people get to things like medical appointments and social services facilities.
