Taking a series of trains, buses and fun facts about them

Passengers in the sleeper cars get all meals included, coach passengers can opt in for meals.
I’m a fan of their breakfasts, I think it’s a nice way to start the day and it’s pretty good (diner quality omelets)
(I generally like breakfast and dinner on the train. I don’t love the sandwich / melts / burgers for lunch. They have other dishes at breakfast and dinner)
@skinnylatte I would not rely on coach passengers being able to buy meals in the dining car. They only offer that sometimes, and you probably don't want to rely on the gas station quality cafe car microwaved offerings on longer journeys.

There’s a couple of their honeymoon.
Everyone’s congratulating them. An Amtrak employee’s family is on board with his kids and they’re expecting another child.
This is why I like train travel. Proper cutlery, views, observation lounges, rolling into city centers, no TSA

I feel like I’ve lived my life as an endless series of side quests.
This is also how I play video games
We’re all now singing a birthday song to a passenger

@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io Don't you have a Fallout 4 save that's like 10 years old or something? Side questing, heck yeah.
@julie yes! And I just started another fallout 4 on my steam deck!

There’s a little child who’s really into trains and they’ve been letting her make announcements all night and morning
Could have been me!
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io that's sweet as hell

@skinnylatte like The Eagles song
@Ashedryden @skinnylatte I thought The Eagles made the place up until just now. Literally had never heard of it outside of the song..

@Andres4NY I think they have a statue of the Eagles there or a plaque or something @skinnylatte

We’ve been stuck outside Albuquerque for 1.5 hours (on top of the earlier stuck for 2 hours in Arizona)
There’s a couple of other trains including this train in the other direction that have to pass through and also get service in Albuquerque.
Glad I had the diner car breakfast. I was hoping to get to Albuquerque for.. brunch. Ahahaha

@skinnylatte Train travel is so good. Last year I went from London to Sweden for a running race. It was great, apart from the German trains, of course.

@skinnylatte Genuine question, why take trains to Atlanta vs fly?

@artcollisions I really like trains

@skinnylatte Ok, fair.

@skinnylatte @artcollisions Trains are pretty great! We've taken sleeper cars down the East Coast to FL on two occasions and while we didn't sleep super great (spouse is a longboi as you may recall) it was a lovely journey overall. Once we took the AUTOTRAIN which must be pronounced in all caps.

@swachter @artcollisions also, bad train things are just not as bad as bad flying experiences.
We’re sitting here and there’s AC and free snacks and people to talk to. The temp of people in trains just much happier and warmer
People are more ‘haha, isn’t it awful’ instead of angry
It’s a different way of seeing the world that’s less about getting there (eventually you will.. but I feel like that’s a very US train thing)

@skinnylatte @swachter Very much agree.
It's just, for most travel, it takes a long time. Not everyone has that luxury.

@skinnylatte @artcollisions I think there's something about even when the train is stuck, you're not *trapped* in the same way you are on a plane. Generally you can still get up and move around and use the bathroom and move between different cars as opposed to planes where they get EXTREMELY CRANKY if you leave your seat even if you're stuck on the tarmac.

@artcollisions @swachter oh yeah I wouldn’t be able to do this if I had a job job right now.
But that’s also the state of a lot of US local transit. Good in theory, glad it exists.. wish it were more reliable. And faster. (Shanghai to Beijing is 4.5h hours for 820 miles), many times a day

@swachter @skinnylatte Oh yes, this is a huge difference for me. I love taking the train between NYC and DC.

@skinnylatte @swachter why can't we have fast trains in the US? *sobs* Don't answer. I know.
