Honestly, having AV1 become the default codec of choice for people sharing content illegally would be the #1 way to build momentum there.
That, and making sure that every device we ship from now on includes hardware decoding support, would really help turn the tide I reckon (the latter is mostly happening already, thankfully).

@nathandyer YES! 100% we need a license free standardized high quality video format. AV1 is here and great. I wish more devices and services put their focus on it.

@micahilbery @nathandyer Isn't VP9 also royalty-free? Unfortunately, AV1 encoding is still pretty new and a lot of harware still lacks encoders...
I agree though; true standards should never be patented. I'm looking at you HDMI.

@cameron_bosch It is, but it's closer to H.264 than H.265/HEVC in terms of efficiency and feature support. For 4K video and HDR you really need something beyond what VP9 offers. Plus, even for your standard SDR 1080p content, the filesizes/bitrates are so much smaller for the same quality levels.

@nathandyer The bluray rips are usually remuxxing rather than reencodings. Which means the format of the encoding is dependent on how the content was distributed.
So in order for av1 to become the torrent default, the content would have to be distributed as such already, or to rencode/transcode the content and incur quality loss.

@alatiera Definitely true! But looking at the numbers of seeders/leechers on public torrent trackers, the number of people downloading a 60GB remux vs a 20GB re-encode is tiny in comparison. At least the re-encodes could be done in AV1.

@cameron_bosch @nathandyer Ugh, the HDMI situation really grinds my gears. I hate that it’s not just the default but mostly the ONLY interface on most devices.
