Very odd, but cool. Looks like a powerful storm blew a road sign right into the tree and just under the bark. Must have been some storm!
Looks like someone came along, painted out the wording on the sign, bent it over, then wrote Curves Ahead on it. Maybe.

Signs warning of curves are normally black letters on bright yellow background. This one having a white background suggests it may have originally been a speed limit or parking sign, with the wording changed as you suggest. -
