My prices are NOT AT ALL consistent bc every time I raise them I stop getting comms and inevitably drop the price drastically out of necessity.
But every time I change them I feel guilty for all the people who were saving when I raise them, or paid the high price before I drop them..
I bring it up bc I’m at a point where even the low prices aren’t selling anymore. I’ve only gotten 6 comms in the last -five months- and thank god they were $120+
So I’m debating just upping the prices to where I’ll only need a few a month anyway. Like $100 per headshot high… idk I feel guilty

Could use some advice here, really. I’ve always priced my headshots $20-45 so $100 sounds painful and idk if I’m at that skill level jskfks but idk what else to do. At this point if I only sell 1 $100 headshot a month it would already be better …

@kineia3 I see your art as good and I'd expect to see higher rates.
Price changes are the usual in your situation, for finding what works. That's like the artist finding a new style or changing what kinds of commissions are available, also not a thing to feel guilty for.
(I'd boost if the pic, which looks cute and is the reason I noticed the post, had alt text, e.g. Kineia3 as a feral yeen, sitting on back paws, with a happy smile expression. Several symbolic stars in the background.)
I personally have the issue of not doing much design for my character and not considering my single-color husky to be sufficient to commission some artists I like the art of.

Added alt text! I really gotta get better at that, I added the image as an afterthought so it didn’t cross my mind 🥲
Personally I love doing single-color characters, especially for painted things but even flats is fun. No worries over getting markings right lol I can focus on the expression and art style more :))

@kineia3 I definitely really sympathize with this and am not sure if I have any useful advice. I raised my prices a couple months ago after being told by people close to me that for the time and effort I was putting in, I was making sub-minimum wage. And I probably haven't been doing great at advertising mine, but I haven't gotten a single commission since I raised my prices...
Your art is really really good. Definitely worth $100+ and you should be suspicious of anyone who tells you otherwise. -

@kineia3 really liked the artwork you made for Puffin !
A little recommendation this bird can give is a lot of your art post don't have any hashtag attached to them and it how discoverability work on fedi so they are pretty important to have a wider reach. Might help have more consistent commissioner if more critter can find you.
If you don't have the energy to alt the image it always possible to tag them with "# altforme" to get help from friendly fedi critters !
Don't hesitate to self boost previous work you did too because not every subscriber might have been able to see it the first time too.
Don't think your price are the problems but maybe more a lack of reach ?

@kineia3 at your skill level, i think you can justify a higher rate. the way i raise prices is by about $2 or so every few comms until i get to the price i'm looking for to avoid scaring away customers with sudden price jumps. but i noticed my comms went to 0 after i stopped posting bc of my fulltime job, so it may be a reach issue or it may be larger-scale issues (people spend less at the beginning of a new year due to the holidays)

@Puffin Reach can definitely be a factor here, especially since I had to stop posting for a while I feel like I’ve got to “pick up momentum” again if that makes sense
And yea I really struggle with hashtags too

@leafeon yea I stopped posting for a while bc of an irl job too but it’s been a few months since I went back to full time art so I was hoping it’d pick back up by now. Reach can definitely be it. I have always struggled around Dec-Feb time but it usually starts going back up in March, at least for me, and it seems to not have despite lower prices

@kineia3 imo lower prices might not be helping since people don't generally buy art because it's cheap. also if you price too low then people who don't know how to assess art quality might see it as an indicator of low quality. some people do have budget limitations but in that situation it's better to have options that take less hours rather than lowering your hourly rate (e.g. offer a headshot instead of a fullbody rather than reducing what you make per hour on a fullbody)
