I've linked the message that added me to this exclusive club. In that post, Chad said he would be publishing a State of the Instance in text form this week. I want to ensure that information is out there so other Mastonauts can hold him accountable. It's anyones best guess as to why he keeps deleting his posts. Apparently the owner of mstdn.ca keeps the server in his homelab, has been accused of a serious crime, and people are predicting that police will seize the server along with everything else in his home.

This information may be out of date, though. I'm not privy to whatever's been said on Discord.

I do find it interesting that, despite the seriousness of the criminal accusation and the possibility that the owner might delete evidence from his computers, the server remains online.

However, the owner last posted 3 days ago https://mstdn.ca/@chad and used to post regularly, so he may have been arrested. Even if the police chose not to seize the server for some reason, it won't remain online for long if he's in jail and can't pay his bills.

Here we go again with accusations, rumour, insinuations and hate speech against an individual. It is so sad.

Chad has been very ill with pneumonia. He was actually in hospital recently and is still recovering. There are other administrators who monitor the instance when he is not available.

There are many many instances where the servers are sitting in their house. This is common.

Lets all take a deep breath and wait until something is proven beyond doubt before we act rashly.

@jerome They need to get their Mastodon archive/backup asap. Export their follow list, blocks, mutes, etc and ideally do an account migration.

The mastodon backup itself just lets them import their posts later if they need it. But while the server is still up, I'd do an account migration now, were it me.

There were some events a few months ago and I stopped using this account, with the intent of deleting it and finding a new instance after I got some time.

@jerome This is FUD. Spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt. If you had new evidence, you'd be talking to the police, not spreading fear online and telling people to move instance.

As for @chad he posted as recently as of a few hours ago. Stop trying to make things difficult. Anyone is free to move to whatever instance they want, regardless of reason, but don't spread rumours and gossip to influence people to move.

Disclaimer: I don't know Chad. I've never met him, and have never lived in the same province as him. All I know, like any of you, is what was in that old CBC article.

@jerome I was initially redicent to move instances based on an accusation, but on further investigation and input from others, my feelings changed - especially on governance and management processes that were pretty much non existent on mstdn.ca.

I switched to @coop and I've been happy since 🥰

I do wish him well though, and props to the work he put in over the years.

I hope justice prevails. ️
