1996 U.S. pressingDragging through another Monday morning, and after a blind pull from the library, THIS gets first spin of the morning.
Although I don’t like this quite as much as their first effort Manos, there’s still a lot here to like.
Elliott Smith sings on two of these songs, and on whole, Strand is an album that leans heavily into making the studio itself an instrument; experimenting in THAT way more than live instrumentation and performance.
It’s a very dreamy, and gauzy sounding record.Rebecca Gates has such a wonderful voice, and it continues to shine here.
After Manos, it’s almost like they made a conscious decision to not become part of the #90s music machine, which they could have easily done.
Instead, they just quietly made two really good records, another decent one, and that was it.Start with Manos.
