Indeed, boycotts generally work. We only have the word boycott in the English language because the ostracism campaign against absentee landlords (represented by Captain Boycott) organised by the Irish Land Leagues in 1880 worked so well.

@GeofCox @aral TIL boycott was an English land agent whose ostracism by his local community in Ireland gave the English language the term boycott. this is what happened to South Africa in the 70s and 80s (I remember the campaigning). Total isolation until the whole thing became untenable. Unfortunately, here we are dealing with zealots in the true sense of the word.
