I don't understand the Age Verification issue. #BigTech knows sooooooo much about us. If they can tell my age well enough to send me ads for wrinkle creams and to suggest that I follow pelvic floor therapists on social media, surely they can tell who is under 13.

Why is an additional verification method needed?

@AnastasiaE When I was a man in my mid-twenties google kept thinking I was a woman in my late thirties... I'm probably an edge case due to rigorous ad blocking, but it was pretty annoying constantly getting ads checking if I was interest in starting a family before it was too late

@AnastasiaE why can’t they access so much information on me when I can’t even access any personal information on anyone without their consent? FOI and personal privacy act! They are missing/ignoring the second part!

@AnastasiaE Well, possibly, Google was less much less wrong than I thought about me being a woman.

That said, most of the people I talk to find it as wildly off about where they live, their age, and/or their gender. I really think their data collection and advertising algorithms are way less accurate than they want companies purchasing ads to think they are.

@Canageek @AnastasiaE They are also occasionally wrong in a funny way. I used to have my old ipad linked to my personal google account, which is also on my work computer for email. And I use google for a lot of chemistry related searches, to the point where ads on the ipad at home were for santa cruz biotech antibodies and various things from fisher scientific. Even if I was looking up something for cooking at home, it couldn't distinguish between "citric acid because I'm trying to tweak a recipe" vs. "ACS grade citric acid to make a buffer".

@AnastasiaE sorry the message should’ve read ‘why can’t they access they access so much information’ not “can’t “ but I believe you understood that.

@AnastasiaE one of the weird things I keep hearing is about how "legislation to stop big tech" often is proposed by people "aligned" with big tech in order to crush small tech, because small tech can't afford the boardroom full of lawyers to ensure they're compliant...

@AnastasiaE Thats because there are so many bot accounts right now so companies that buy data wants more accurancy because they don't want to pay for data info and all they get are bot accounts.

They want to adversite to real people, and now tech companies need more reliability with the data they collect.

@FrutigerAero00 That is interesting. I guess that is a compelling reason for the companies, but not for me, and ideally not for my government.
