A colony is usually founded on a #BigLie: a strategic untruth on which an edifice of mendacity can be presented as truth. The biggest is "#TerraNullius", the notion of an empty land which may lawfully be grabbed.
For 4 decades after 1948, #zionism's lie of an "empty land" dominated in Europe & America. Then a new generation of #Palestinian & #Israeli scholars documented the #Nakba, destroying #GoldaMeir's Big Lie.
#EdwardSaid is right. #Israel was created by #EthnicCleansing of #Palestine.

@2legged A split-screen image displays two portraits side-by-side against a black background. On the left, a person with gray hair and a pearl necklace is shown above the quote, "We arrived in a barren, empty land and made the desert bloom through sheer pioneer spirit, creating a thriving democratic sanctuary for our exiled people," with the name "GOLDA MEIR" below. On the right, a person with dark hair wearing a collared shirt is shown above the quote, "There was no empty desert. You systematically bulldozed over five hundred thriving indigenous villages, wiped their Arabic names off the map, map, and buried their history under your newly planted pine trees," with the name "EDWARD SAID" below.

@2legged a case of the house of the planter being know by the trees? In other words, are pine trees in particular an introduced species? Or is the Said quote just a way of describing systematic erasure?

@muddle I know thar in parts of the west of Ireland, particular types of tree planting identify the site of a planter's or landlord's house.
It's not an issue I was consciously exploring of when I was last in Israel or Palestine many decades ago, but in hindsight it rings bells. I'd certainly be looking out for it if I returned, but that return is not going to happen. But erasure tends to follow patterns, and it'd be fascinating to explore.

@2legged I was referring to this particular poem:
The Planter's Daughter poem - Austin Clarke
When night stirred at sea, An the fire brought a crowd in They say that her beauty Was music in mouth And few in the candlelight Thought her too proud, For the house of the planter
