So #OpenAI wants to introduce an "adult mode" to ChatGPT so people who are fed up with the boring AI porn over at Grok have more choice.

And their product policy team pushed back, citing that this would likely be detrimental to users' well-being.
Being the balanced, well-hinged company they are, OpenAI then proceed to fire the head of said product team, citing sexual discrimination against a male colleague. And proceeds to tout "adult mode".
Whew.

@christopherkunz do you have a source for that? I'd like to ask company leadership when we can stop the hype train.

@Laird_Dave Sure, it was in the WSJ (+): https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/openai-executive-who-opposed-adult-mode-fired-for-sexual-discrimination-3159c61b
Of course, the firing is completely unrelated to the "adult mode" criticism. Obviously.

@Laird_Dave Looking at Ms. Beiermeister's LinkedIn profile, it seems she has a penchant for fighting uphill battles: She did product management at Palantir, then social impact stuff at Meta and has been with OpenAI for about 1.5 years.
Those aren't the companies I'd list if I was asked for the most socially responsible enterprises... -

@Laird_Dave Can't really say I personally disagree, but let's give her CV the benefit of the doubt.
Where else if not at these companies could a person with a clear moral compass, hired as an exec to use this compass, make an actual impact on social responsibility?
Yeah I know, I'm being naïve again.

@christopherkunz So they decided to make porn to make money? Good move.

@si2mev IMHO Revenue isn't OpenAI's primary problem, but EBIT is. And I doubt that the regulatory nightmares around introducing porn to your platform is going to really help that issue. Imagine the amount of markets that would have to regulate OpenAI because porn of any sort is outright illegal.

@christopherkunz that's not how any of this works, I guess
