    After today's local elections we will have a good idea how bad a mess the Labour Party is in (even if this also refracted through local issues).

    This weekend will also see a tsunami of commentary about the Labour Party leadership for sure; but much of this will continue to treat politics as a soap opera that takes place in the Westminster village.

    For many voters this is exactly the problem they see when the mainstream media & parties claim the 'insurgents' are not fit to govern...

      @christineburns @ChrisMayLA6 My eldest works in a political office locally and whilst there are no local elections here today the biggest issues flagged by constituents include local issues such as anti-social behaviour, the state of the town centre and…drumroll…potholes. That’s not to say that national issues/talking points don’t come up as well.

        @spanghero @christineburns @ChrisMayLA6 I think we must live in the same place.

          @christineburns @ChrisMayLA6 Pondering on this I think it shows how it’s easy to see why national politicians bend to suit a perceived majority when in fact they are dealing with a vocal minority.
          People motivated to engage local politicians are probably more politically engaged, and here it’s a small town with a significant elderly population. Targeting policies/statements on just those people could well further alienate or turn off others.

            @christineburns

            I think that's fair... but equally people's actual experience of governance (bin collection, road surfaces) are often related to local councils & so from that point ion view local issues may also contribute to the colouring of political views

              @christineburns @ChrisMayLA6 I can’t answer that without speculating but I will ask my eldest when he’s back this evening. I know there is quite a lot of confusion of which issues should be aimed where; national or local, which has been compounded over the last few decades by repeated funding cuts from central Government and general ignorance around statutory duties, etc.
