I think I just had THE fediverse moment:Scrolling through my timeline watching text posts, photos, a peertube video...A short video.

@coreysnipes @slothrop @hikingdude @elperronegro@shmg.online @elperronegro@loops.video what is the difference between posting videos on Loops versus on any Mastodon instance? Is Loops somehow optimized for video (storage)? Thanks!
@fedops @coreysnipes @hikingdude @elperronegro@shmg.online @elperronegro@loops.video AFAICT the Loops Ui is built along the same lines as TikTok: optimized for making, posting and viewing short videos.
I don’t know what the server side looks like.

Scrolling through my timeline watching text posts, photos, a peertube video...A short video."ah nice MTB video" , I thought. Until I saw the handle: someone@loops. Wait.. I see a loops here. This isn't just a video. This is a video on A DIFFERENT Service. And I can seamlessly interact with it.
A new service just integrated seamlessly into my timeline. No "connect your account", no "extra app", no "extra login", no, it's just there
This is #fediverse
@hikingdude Exactly This is the magic of the fediverse everything just flows together

@fedops That's the question I keep coming back to, for myself. If everything federates, why bother with multiple accounts? (I tried pixelfed but didn't see an advantage for myself.) Maybe it's just a matter of what you're used to. Started with Instagram? Pixelfed. Started with TikTok? Loops. Started with Twitter? Masto. etc.

@slothrop @coreysnipes @hikingdude @elperronegro@shmg.online @elperronegro@loops.video aha, that would be an explanation. Looking through a client like Pachli or Tusky it all appears exactly the same.

Ah the one feature for pixelfed - for me - would be stories. But honestly not enough for me to use it a lot (even though I use Instagram and WhatsApp stories
). But whoever likes it, go for it. Peertube is just optomized for video streaming in different resolutions, subtitles etc.
But yes, I think a lot of people find themselves asking this question sooner or later.

@hikingdude Yeah.
It's glorious.
And even better, there's probably humans moderating your instance who are keeping nazis and assholes out.

This is a great feature. I haven't seen anyone from Loops yet, but I like that I can follow/view anyone on the rest of the Fediverse. I think I'm personally following at least one account on Pixelfed, and another one on Piefed, and can follow people on Lemmy (though votes seem to be unsupported(?))

@slothrop @hikingdude @elperronegro@shmg.online @elperronegro@loops.video@coreysnipes @fedops @slothrop @hikingdude @elperronegro@shmg.online @elperronegro@loops.video the way I see it, different Fediverse apps optimize the experience for their specific use cases. For example, Pixelfed optimizes for posting pictures (I believe Mastodon limits you to 4 pictures of a certain resolution per post and Pixelfed has higher limits), Lemmy optimizes for threaded discussion communities, etc. So even though you can consume and interact with a different app, the experience may be better on that app.
