#JenGerson: "Smith needs to tell the separatists that if they want to force a secession vote on the province, they need to start a party, stand up their own candidates, and win in a general election -- exactly as the PQ did.

And Ms. Gerson again: "They would rather break apart the entire country than let another team win."

It's frankly bleak that Alberta seems to be headed towards the same political dead-end Québec did. Why do we make the same mistakes over and over again?

@mpjgregoire Because a few can often profit personally from misdirecting the anger and fears of their constituents . . . -
@mpjgregoire Because a few can often profit personally from misdirecting the anger and fears of their constituents . . .@mpjgregoire (I would be surprised if the independence referendum passes in Alberta though. The set of folks who are for it, by all measures I've seen, has held steady despite all the pushing for it.)

1. I don't buy it. There were lots of other issues Alberta politicians could have used that are less dangerous than separatism.2. They're creating the "Alberta Disadvantage" — why not prefer investing in Ontario or BC? There's a risk, small but real, of political upheaval in Alberta.

@mpjgregoire Alberta Separatism has long been a popular idea with *exactly* a certain sort of person who's most likely to vote Tory here and be energetic about it---as that recent CBC study showed, folks who are well above average in terms of income and yet struggling to meet their financial obligations. It's the sort of people, and grievances, that fueled the creation of the Wild Rose party in the first place. So it's the grift in hand, worth two in the bush . . . -
