@volpeon 100% agree. There is something about the structure of social media that almost seems to force people into opposing camps. This is even true for systems without algorithmic boosting like Mastodon. Nuance gets overwhelmed by tribal signifiers and shibboleths.

@volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip let's not fail to credit the parties who benefit most from these absolute positions for brewing these conditions from the start. it's not just social media

@volpeon The only problems I have with AI is company greed. OpenAI don't need 1000 GPUs or whatever, it's just jacking up prices for the rest of us
The problem with AI art affecting real artists can easily be solved with one of those AI art detector websites. So you'll know -

@volpeon and both sides are completely wrong.

@volpeon Ok, but ... what if you don't actually want something but everyone tries to sell it to you, day and night? Should you shut up about it? And how exactly wouldn't your view shift more and more to the completely negative?
If you don't like fries and 15 new people every day jump and you and attempt to stuff them down your throat ... you eventually do become toxic.
i am not excluding myself, i am toxic and hyper militant in this regard. And i will not stop, because doing that feels like accepting it.

@volpeon I mean, you're absolutely right.
It's fair to say the tech isn't doing the harm, its capital as always. Capital is pushing for the replacement of workers and disenfranchisement of artists. Capital are the ones trying to ruin the environment and build more data centers than Walmart stores.
But there's a loneliness epidemic, people aren't able to connect. While talking with AI is like junk food like potato chips in comparison to human conversation which is like a healthy meal... Well, potato chips are better than nothing if nothing else is available. Is it really all that ethical to remove what has become some people's only social outlet, when they don't have the ability or courage to reach out for real human connection?
Honestly, AI could probably solve the issue computerized dating has had forever. People aren't honest or draw blank about trying to describe themselves and what they want. It's probably the one thing LLMs are good at doing, building a profile of you that can be used to match you to another real person.
But, a service like that would have an end date, a day when you close your account because it's job is done. So capital is like:

@catraxx I am not telling you or anybody to shut up, that's entirely not the point. I am angry that most of discourse on social media only happens in absolutes, from all fucking sides. This isn't just a problem when it comes to AI, it's merely the topic that's bringing out the pure essence of what's making social media such a devastating threat to our society.

@volpeon I didn't say you were, but i am also confused what else to do. It's not a great time in general ...
... i don't want to upset you either. -

... i don't want to upset you either.@catraxx All of this bullshit is the result of an environment designed to pit everyone against each other all the time. It's hard not to inadvertently become part of the problem yourself, and that includes me, too. I'm trying to be more mindful of my use of the site so it doesn't happen, but, well... some days it works better than others. β

I prefer spoiler filters because I don't know if the proper filters also hide replies to me. If I don't respond, then that might be it. β
