Got off a video call with the humane society. We got final approval to adopt the cats!
They are very very picky about who can adopt their adult-caught formerly feral cats, since they're more challenging than a well-behaved kitten, but they apparently had a meeting about me and my husband and concluded that we know enough of what we're doing to give them a good home. 🥺
Hearing that made me feel like I could finally breath after holding my breath. We pick up the kitties next Monday after filling out some paperwork and taking two of them to their final humane society vet appointment. Then we bring them home, put them in our newly furnished cat room, and begin the work of making them comfortable.

@Dio9sys feral cats (or even former indoor/outdoor cats (not sure what the proper English word for this is) will always want to get outside, but a cat room for times they are unwatched is probably good. And maybe they turn out to be a charm and just wanna snuggle or rest on humans. There is these kind of cats I heard. And well there is the kind of cats that only like to rest on female humans, that seems to be common too.
All the best of luck with the cats anyway!

@utzer Yup! We have installed storm doors to keep them from bolting, and have installed childproof locks on every cabinet they can reach, and have blocked off the door that leads to the eaves under the roof. Basically trying to turn it into a maximum security kitty prison but with enough comfy stuff for them that it's not a jail so much as a safe home.

@Dio9sys "but with enough comfy stuff for them" aka empty card board boxes. Our love the empty boxes that the bulk food order or the new toy comes in more than the actual toy.
Cats are fun.
