Dropping in a new CPU and some new memory should be quick, right? Even with the server still racked, without rails.. but nothing on top of it.

Except that the heatsink retaining thingy was not glued to the mainboard and I had to lift the mainboard to mount the heatsink...

Except that there are two cards on that mainboard and a bunch of cables both internally and externally without proper labels

Except that it didn't want to boot at first try, saying it doesn't like the memory.. nor the original memory... Okay, other upgraded CPU in.. fine with original memory and upgraded memory. Originally planned CPU back in .. fine

Okay time to mount the mainboard again... Fuck, dropped the second to last bolt under it and can't reach it and again; the system is racked to can't just tilt it ...

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I'm still not done, after having had to lift the mainboard AGAIN to find an apparently missing bolt... THAT APPARENTLY I NEVER INSTALLED IN THE FIRST PLACE /o\

(noticed the heap has one bolt too few, so was afraid it's under the mainboard.. but no, it's not to be found, never installed it I guess)

@littlefox so not 100% sure what you meant by 'other upgraded CPU in' and then everything being fine, but, just to be sure I wanted to note that it's indeed correct that two different CPUs, even if they're the same socket, usually don't work together. Even having the same CPU but a different stepping can cause it to not POST.

That said, nice you got it working 😄 cozy supermicro machiney

@anthropy it's a single socket system; I had a i3-4170 in there and initially upgraded to E3-1285L v4; which initially gave me a "memory not installed" POST code
Installed the old memory again but still got that POST code
swapped in a E3-1285L v3 and it POSTed fine, also with the new memory
dropped the E3-1285L v4 in again and suddenly it was happy 🤷‍♀️

@littlefox ahh, then perhaps it was a seating issue for the CPU or some thermal paste or dust got underneath.

At work we actually reseat (or "dance" / switch around) the CPUs when there are memory/PCIE/etc issues in a machine before doing anything else (is diagnosed as step automatically, we don't even see the machine yet at that point!), as it actually solves a lot of the issues

LGAs/PGAs are magic, so much pins at such narrow timings, it's insane that it works at all 😅
