    @evacide I suspect this is easier with languages/countries that exhibit a high degree of regional dialect variation. Most Germans when I talk to them just assume I’m from a different part of Germany.

      @evacide Next level: they ask “how long have you been here?” as if you were a native speaker who has been in the US too long 😆

        @evacide My $spouse, a native speaker of US English, is somewhat regularly asked what country she's from. I would love having a linguist + speech therapist determine root cause for this!

            @Tarah @wendynather @evacide

            Ha! I got that after a couple of years. It's actually almost an insult when you've heard their weird French.

            At a party once, some chap thought I was from the south of France like him. But we were passably drunk...

                  @evacide I wish "Japanese Rule of 7" was still online. One of those 7 was "日本語上手", or, as you said, your Japanese is so good!

                    @eliza @evacide My English colleague was also pleased to hear that his Dutch was good enough that the Dutch thought he was Belgian. 🙂

                    There must be a joke in there somewhere...

                      When you have laws with which it is impossible to comply, you end up with selective enforcement that only punishes the opponents of people in power. Just sayin'.
