@tess as long as your posts are tagged with the correct language it's quite easy to translate on mastodon!

@oblomov setting distribution and language before I can start typing is fucking onerous, ngl

We need some kind of auto-detection

@tess This is going to sound strange coming from someone who has a dedicated memes and live toots account … but no, probably not. The way I use it is pretty noisy and I figure I’d lose some people who would rather not see 15-30 posts in a seemingly random hour on a Monday afternoon.

I think folks can handle a bit of posting in French. And if they can’t, Mastodon allows them to filter out languages they’d rather not see in their timeline as long as the language is set correctly on the post.

Edit: I have no idea how "the post" became "YT post" but I was typing that from my phone so I'm going to blame autocorrect.

@evert @tess +1 and there is the option to "Change subscribed languages for" in the settings on Mastodon, for those who for some reasons wouldn't want to see posts in another language.

@tess it does auto detect, at least in the sense that the language indicator will flash if it thinks you're writing in a different language, and will offer what it thinks it's the correct language on top (at least for me, from the PWA)

@tess if you do, for sure share it, I'll follow that one too. Good practice for my rusty French.

@tess No, my experience with posting in German, English and occasionally in Spanish is very good. No complaints in several years. But I put a lot of effort in correct language tags and even delete wrongly tagged posts.
