Ciò che siamo stati è una sequela di misfatti tragici accompagnata anche da una presa di consapevolezza dei nostri limiti. Siamo stati, non lo siamo più. La storia della barbarie ha sostituito la storia della civilizzazione
Civilization or barbarism: only if it recovers itself, Europe will have a sense.
What we were is a sequence of tragic misdeeds accompanied also by an awareness of our limits. We were, we are no longer. The history of barbarity has replaced the history of civilization.
