Now, I'm beginning to understand that this is the point of mastodon. Engagement on mastodon has different rules. It's a bit more effortful. It is actually the greatest aspect of mastodon I think.

I love that there's a slight learning curve that serves to keep toxic people from staying. I love the human moderation. I love that 99.9% of the people here engage with each other in good faith.
Mastodon isn't flashy, but it's authentic, organic, and if I ever want slop I know where to go to find it outside of this little oasis on the web.

I've had more in depth conversations with strangers on mastodon than I've had in years on Facebook and I never really joined any other social media.I learn about animals, moss, birds, lock picking, and fancy windows here instead of which relative has become staunchly anti-reason.
