@Daojoan As someone who used to have several streamers subscribed to at all times, I’m here to say that you can enjoy life just fine if you only have one going at a time and each one only for 1 month before cancelling it. We save hundreds of dollars per year with this approach and still get to watch everything we want to, just usually a little later than we used to. And we get to feel like we’re telling the streamers where to shove their price increases, as a bonus.

@Daojoan I got rid of them all. I only purchase movies via my Apple TV. I always buy what’s on sale. Occasionally I house sit for my daughter who has a selection of Streaming Services and I binge watch stuff I haven’t seen in a while. I refuse to pay for their enshitification of their services.

if #netflix etc don't like that, they should stop ripping people off, oh and they should also stop removing Palestinian movies and docs. -

@Daojoan that's why I no longer watch anything. I read books: either borrowed in our local or county libraries or bought from independent local bookshops (or bookshop org, if I want ebook, with our local bookshop linked). And honestly, I think this is one of the best things that happened to me in the past several years.
@good_dog_rex @Daojoan I read lots of books too, always have. But I also borrow DVDs and CDs from my local library, buying stuff I like enough or that the library doesn't have. Lots of stuff there that's hard to find streaming, especially older stuff; certainly more than enough for the time I want to spend watching or listening.

@joe @Npars01 @Daojoan I envision something a bit bigger: like a federated Kickstarter replacement for much larger projects requiring collectives creative professionals and allied trades, where we (the audience, collectively) could hire the entire cast for a feature film or TV series directly.
It would take a lot of work, and would probably require a membership-based nonprofit as the legal entity to sign the contracts and disperse the funds, but in principle, the technical pieces we need to cut the studios and networks out entirely already exist.
All that remains required is a lot of organization, a little software, and a lot of software security review.
