I think that informs some of it. But there is also the "only we are civilized" mentality that prevents them from seeing that a richer world is ... richer.
Wouldn't is be nice to sell our US media products, software, manufactured goods, and materials to a booming world market?
You start wars you set back the clock on that. Same for new science. War is regressive broadly except for the profiteers and looters.
