    @sberson

    He's worse than Trump. I don't think Trump really cares about all of that strange nonsense he was going on about.

    Agreed, really all Trump cares about is enriching himself and having his ego stroked, while avoiding accountability for his past and current crimes - he has no actual interest in foreign policy beyond what he absurdly thinks makes him look "tough" and "peace prize winning" at the same time. That is, with the exception that he is easily swayed by whatever ego-stroker last has his ear. So we have now entered an era where the US Navy regularly does piracy and war crimes in and around the Caribbean, and where we're tightening the screws on the already long suffering Cuban and Venezuelan people, just because of vendetta and idiocy from Rubio.

      @sberson

      Why do we have to do regime changes and wars when we could be doing trade and baseball series and academic conferences?

      This is all so tired.

      Why on earth should any regular person in the US care about any of these mealy-mouthed antique goals Rubio is talking about?

      Why should any of us want to endure economic hardship or kill or die for his BS?

        All of this. When he was made Secretary of State I thought he was one of the few Trump appointments that would be relative sane amidst the clown show of a cabinet - but instead he's just turned out to be a sycophantic neo-con of the worst kind, pushing for pointless military adventurism with massive confidence backed up only by total incompetence, that will only end up with more destruction for both those outside and inside the USA.

        He's worse that Dick Cheney. He thought all that stuff but wouldn't run around saying it out loud.

        Interventionism isn't popular in the US, not even with independents or conservatives. Put him in a little USA World Police uniform and make fun of him.

          Marco Rubio is so much worse than I thought. He has a deceptively normal presentation. But, he's ... IDK sad he didn't get to live in the cold war days?

          Nobody is scared of Cuba in the US anymore there isn't any big bad communist threat it's just his creepy little pet project and vendetta and I really hope people reject this interventionism and meddling.

          It won't make any regular people in the US rich, might get your kid sent off to a very pointless war though.

          @futurebird If he’s sad he missed the Cold War, he should go visit Los Alamos & Sandia. They have many Cold War museums plus actual Cold War scientists still knocking around, people at or near retirement who will be only too happy to tell him stories of the old days. That should keep him busy for a good week & give us a break from his diplomatic shenanigans.

              Janelle Bouie argued the people that make up the trump adminstration have such a rigid and limitrd concept of masculinity, they think you have to violently dominate your opponent to be a real man.

              They seem to think trade and cooperation and soft power is too gay or feminine for them.

                @futurebird This might play well with the Cuban “exile” community, but absolutely no one else. And the generation that fled Cuba is dying of old age.

                  I think that informs some of it. But there is also the "only we are civilized" mentality that prevents them from seeing that a richer world is ... richer.

                  Wouldn't is be nice to sell our US media products, software, manufactured goods, and materials to a booming world market?

                    The kind of Cubans I know hate it. But I think there are right wing ones in FL who like this stuff.

                    But this is very niche. Nobody else cares. OMG.

                        I mean sure, their rigid social hierarchy is also racist in addition to being sexist.

                        They act like they think believe the wealthy white man should be considered superior to everyone else and get very mad when the rest of us go, we'd like someone more competent now.

                        Also they hate science, because it is currently telling them things they don't want to hear like "burning oil is killing us", or "the African lineage has more genetic diversity than the European lineage."
